Ontario Orders Closure of Mountains Institute of Technology

Province Suspends Registration of Markham-based Private Career College

January 8, 2010

A Markham-based private career college has been shut down after violating the province's Private Career Colleges Act.

Mountains Institute of Technology cannot operate as a private career college in Ontario. It cannot deliver vocational programs or solicit or accept applications from students.

The Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities' Superintendent of Private Career Colleges ordered Mountains Institute to cease operation. The Superintendent suspended and revoked the Institute's private career college registration due to violations of the Private Career Colleges Act, including making misrepresentations to Ministry staff and failing to maintain programs as approved.

To operate in Ontario, private career colleges must be registered and have their programs approved by the ministry under the Private Career Colleges Act, 2005. This act ensures that the colleges meet certain standards for the programs they offer, as well as for their advertising, refund policies, and instructor qualifications.

The notice issued to Mountains Institute of Technology is available on the ministry's PCC Violations website. Students can use the ministry's online search service to find registered private career colleges and approved programs in Ontario.
