Public Colleges

Ontario is home to 24 public colleges. College courses tend to be more career-oriented than university programs. They offer practical, hands-on training.

Colleges of applied arts and technologyin Ontario offer full and part-time diploma (two-to-three year) and certificate (one-year-or less) programs. Some colleges offer bachelor degree programs in applied areas of study. Colleges also provide pre-trades and apprenticeship training, language training and skills upgrading. In many cases, a college diploma can also  be a pathway to study at a university.

Some Ontario colleges focus on a single area of study, such as agriculture, health science, art or military programs.

Public Universities

Ontario’s universities offer undergraduate (bachelor's) degrees, and most have graduate (master's and doctoral) programs.

Undergraduate degrees usually take three to four years of full-time study to complete. An "honours degree" (the fourth year) is usually required if you want to continue in a graduate program (master's degree). Most universities allow students to combine subject areas (e.g., a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and Biology) into a "double major." Some universities work with colleges to offer programs that combine theoretical and hands-on approaches to learning.

Many universities also offer professional programs, such as medicine, dentistry and law. In some cases, you can begin these programs after two or three years of undergraduate study.

Private Colleges

A private career college is an independent business that prepares students for a specific job, or develops specific skills. There are more than 500 registered private career colleges in Ontario.

By law, private career colleges must be registered and must have their programs approved by the Government of Ontario.

If you enrol in an unregistered college, or an unapproved program, you are putting yourself at risk.

Find out if a school is registered (and learn more about private career colleges in general).

Private Universities

A school needs government approval before it can grant a degree in Ontario. Some private institutions in Ontario have been given partial degree-granting authority. Each of these schools has a religious affiliation.

The following institutions have been granted restricted degree-granting authority by the Legislative Assembly of Ontario. To check on the degree-granting status in Ontario of any other postsecondary institution, please contact the Governance and Accountability Unit, Universities Branch, Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities, at (416) 325-2653.
