Council of the Federation Literacy Award
Ontario winner of the Council of the Federation Literacy Award, 2010Leah Morris Leah Morris is a community builder and passionate advocate for literacy in the Hamilton area. Ms. Morris is executive director of the Adult Basic Education Association in Hamilton, which has been promoting and supporting lifelong learning in the area since 1983. Premier Dalton McGuinty honoured Ms. Morris for her leadership and dedication to helping adults improve their reading and writing skills. "Working in literacy is a team effort, and I am proud of my role and what we have achieved in education and literacy upgrading. Where you are tomorrow depends on what you learn today,"Selection CommitteeMs. Morris was chosen by a three-member selection committee: Jean Doull was selected as the recipient of the 2009 Council of the Federation Literacy Award. Ms. Doull has been an active and dedicated member of the literacy and adult learning community in the Sarnia-Lambton area for many years. Éliane Nguyen is a Senior Research and Policy Analyst at the Ontario Office of Francophone Affairs, analyzing policy issues that affect Francophone communities across Ontario. Ms. Nguyen has volunteered to tutor at-risk youth, organize cultural community events and build a school in Vietnam. Yvonne Morrison is an officer with the Aboriginal Education Office at the Ontario Ministry of Education. Ms. Morrison has been involved in education for more than 20 years, as a teacher, facilitator, consultant, coordinator, and administrator. |
