L'éducation postsecondaire en Ontario
Découvrez comment l'enseignement postsecondaire se déroule en Ontario. Trouvez le programme qui vous convient le mieux.
Ontario is home to 24 public colleges. College courses tend to be more career-oriented than university programs. They offer practical, hands-on training.
Colleges of applied arts and technologyin Ontario offer full and part-time diploma (two-to-three year) and certificate (one-year-or less) programs. Some colleges offer bachelor degree programs in applied areas of study. Colleges also provide pre-trades and apprenticeship training, language training and skills upgrading. In many cases, a college diploma can also be a pathway to study at a university.
Some Ontario colleges focus on a single area of study, such as agriculture, health science, art or military programs.
Ontario’s universities offer undergraduate (bachelor's) degrees, and most have graduate (master's and doctoral) programs.
Undergraduate degrees usually take three to four years of full-time study to complete. An "honours degree" (the fourth year) is usually required if you want to continue in a graduate program (master's degree). Most universities allow students to combine subject areas (e.g., a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and Biology) into a "double major." Some universities work with colleges to offer programs that combine theoretical and hands-on approaches to learning.
Many universities also offer professional programs, such as medicine, dentistry and law. In some cases, you can begin these programs after two or three years of undergraduate study.
Publicly-funded universities in Ontario.
A private career college is an independent business that prepares students for a specific job, or develops specific skills. There are more than 500 registered private career colleges in Ontario.
By law, private career colleges must be registered and must have their programs approved by the Government of Ontario.
If you enrol in an unregistered college, or an unapproved program, you are putting yourself at risk.
Find out if a school is registered (and learn more about private career colleges in general).
A school needs government approval before it can grant a degree in Ontario. Some private institutions in Ontario have been given partial degree-granting authority. Each of these schools has a religious affiliation.
The following institutions have been granted restricted degree-granting authority by the Legislative Assembly of Ontario. To check on the degree-granting status in Ontario of any other postsecondary institution, please contact the Governance and Accountability Unit, Universities Branch, Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities, at (416) 325-2653.

In fall 2009, Canadas premier automotive development centre, the General Motors of Canada Automotive Centre of Excellence, will open on the University UOIT campus as part of the largest and most comprehensive investment ever made in the Canadian automotive industry.
Among its many features, the building will have an environmental wind tunnel to test vehicles under various weather conditions and a four-post shaker system that can test a vehicles ability to handle a range of road conditions.
The centre will also include academic-scale equipment for teaching and research, as well as large-scale, industrial testing equipment for use by our students and faculty, as well as industry.
When a class of 24 medical students inaugurate the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry Windsor Program this September, David Dudok will be cheering them on.
A native of the city, Dudok is entering his fourth and final year at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Western Ontario. He spent the last year in clinical training in Windsor through the Southwestern Ontario Medical Education Network and says that students who come to Windsor through the SWOMEN program have found the medical community and others to be welcoming and friendly.
Windsor medical students will be part of the well-established UWO Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, though they will study at a state-of-the-art medical education building on the UWindsor campus. Scheduled for completion this fall, it is connected to the Toldo Health Education Centre, which includes the Faculty of Nursing and new modern lecture theatres.
Development of the UOIT Centre for Cybercrime Research has brought together world-class researchers and other key individuals in the fight against cybercrime.
The centre will provide a platform for unparalleled research and cutting-edge solutions for critical issues in global law enforcement, including child exploitation and cyberbullying. In addition, the centre will develop research collaboration agreements with academics and experts from other Canadian and international universities, businesses and government agencies for the design of new and improved standards, structures, software and educational programs to battle cybercrime.
During the start-up phase, a number of existing UOIT facilities and laboratories will be used for cybercrime research projects, including the innovative Hacker Research, Gaming Development, Cisco Networking, Virtual Reality and Health Informatics labs.
The amount of trade and traffic flowing between Windsor and Detroit makes it one of the busiest border crossings in the world.
So its only natural that it would draw world-class scholars like William Anderson, recently named Ontario Research Policy Chair in Cross-Border Transportation Policy at the University of Windsor. In this role, Anderson will head UWindsors new Cross-Border Transportation Institute, overseeing its twin tasks of providing policy options and expert opinion to decision-makers and developing an interdisciplinary graduate program.
Windsor-Detroit is part of a massive regional industrial complex with an international border running through the middle of it and there are very few situations like that anywhere in the world, he says. Even in the European Union I dont think theres anything bigger than what we have here.
He says that UWindsors multidisciplinary research and high level of interaction among departments is one of its great strengths and he returns to that theme repeatedly, citing the Canadian-American Research Centre for Law and Policy, the Great Lakes Institute for Environmental Research and the Humanities Research Group.

Theres never been anything quite like it in Canada: the University of Waterloo is setting aside its smallest student residence to serve as an ideas incubator filled with entrepreneurially inclined students. Starting in September, the 72 students picked to live in the universitys Minota Hagey Residence will work together in Velocity to imagine the future of mobile communications, the web and new media.
One of the residence lounges will be turned into a corporate boardroom; another into a project lab and the main common area will double as a presentation and events area. Throughout the fall term, the dormcubator as one IT magazine dubbed it will host guest speakers, workshops and an end-of-term symposium where students can show off their work.
Students entering Velocity in fall 2008 come from upper years in engineering and mathematics faculties, but a handful come from other faculties, including arts and environment.
Cambrian Colleges newly-renovated $2.5 million Library and Learning Commons was officially opened April 24, 2008.
The expanded 20,375 square foot facility is the Colleges hub for information, study, research and out-of-classroom learning. It provides an environment where students can access traditional library resources, technologically advanced learning tools and both group and individual study spaces.
The renovated Library and Learning Commons features a number of benefits, including an open access computer lab, a wireless network environment, improved accessibility and improved study spaces.
Few things are more basic than food. And few things are more multi-faceted, says Steffanie Scott, a University of Waterloo professor in geography jointly appointed to environment and resource studies, who studies changing food systems in Vietnam.
All over the world, Scott says, agriculture and food production are in a state of massive and rapid change and this includes Vietnam, where land reforms in the 1980s changed the system from collective to individual farming.
The best way to manage change in the Vietnamese food system, Scott believes, will be to help efficient small-scale producers who are organized in co-operatives or farmer groups to network with traders, government and research institutes. Its also imperative, she says, to promote a fairer system of global trade.
Food production takes so many forms, from subsistence agriculture to ultra-modern industrial food supply chains. And it brings in so many issues social inequalities, rural transformation, health and the environment.
